Are you unhappy with the color of your teeth? Do you tend to hide your smile because you do not want people to notice the yellow staining? Fortunately, there is a solution that you can be happy about.

Many patients that we see in our office tell us that they are unhappy with the way their teeth look and they want to brighten their smile. These patients are looking for a treatment that will eliminate the staining and provide them with a gorgeous smile.

Unfortunately, the bright, white teeth that you once had in your younger years will fade away and over time, your teeth will begin to discolor. Years of wear on the teeth can cause discoloration, especially when you factor in some common food, drinks, and lifestyle choices. Over the years, these items breakdown the enamel on your teeth and this leads to the staining and the yellowed appearance that your teeth may have.

GET BRIGHT WHITE TEETH:

Teeth whitening is a common dental procedure that is offered to patients who want to change the look of their smile. The procedure is beneficial for all patients because the whitening treatment breaks down and lifts stains from your teeth.

If you are interested in teeth whitening services, give us a call today to schedule your appointment with Dr. Steve Kim.

WHAT CAUSES YELLOWED AND STAINED TEETH?

As mentioned briefly above, some of the common causes of teeth staining are foods, drinks, and lifestyle choices including:

  • Wine
  • Coffee
  • Tomato sauce
  • Acidic foods
  • Soda
  • Smoking

Other times, your teeth may become discolored or stained due to things that are out of your control. For example, consider the additional following reasons:

1. Trauma

If you have experienced any type of tooth or mouth trauma, you may have a tooth that is now discolored or a couple of teeth that are stained. Staining happens as the tooth tries to protect itself and adds a new layer of dentin to the tooth. This will often result in a darkening of the enamel on your tooth.

2. Age

As you age, your teeth will naturally become discolored. This is because the enamel on your teeth begins to wear down and as it does, the dentin starts to become evident.

3. Prescription Medications

When you take prescription medications, you may find that they discolor your teeth. If you need the medication, it is not easy to simply stop taking it for the sake of the color of your teeth. In addition, radiation and chemotherapy treatments can cause darkening and staining of the teeth.

Teeth Whitening

HOW IT WORKS

Dr. Kim uses the Iveri tooth whitening system here in our office because it is safe, efficient, and provides the best results for patients.

When you come in for your tooth whitening treatment, we will place the Iveri whitening gel into a tray that will then be placed inside of your mouth. The whitening gel is made from a combination of both hydrogen peroxide and carbamine peroxide to lift stains from your teeth. The gel also contains potassium nitrate, which helps reduce the amount of sensitivity that you feel, making your experience painless and sensitivity free.

After the tray is placed in your mouth, the gel is then activated by using a UV light. The gel will then begin to break down the stains and remove them from your teeth. Treatment time is about 20 minutes from start to finish and you can resume your social activities once treatment is completed.

IS TOOTH WHITENING SAFE?

Tooth whitening treatments are generally considered safe. There are no long-term side effects, but you may experience some slight sensitivity while you have the treatment performed.

Some patients have also complained that their gums are mildly irritated after tooth whitening sessions, but this is not something that you should expect to happen. If you do experience any gum irritation, it will subside quickly.

If you are concerned about any possible side effects or risks, we welcome you to speak with Dr. Kim about them. He will address all of your questions and concerns before you begin treatment.

YOUR TOOTH WHITENING CONSULTATION

If you are interested in having your teeth whitened, you will need to schedule an appointment with Dr. Steve Kim. He will sit down with you and go over your options, any potential side effects, and also let you know how many treatments he thinks it will take to achieve your desired results.

Before you have your teeth whitened, we will need to clean your teeth to ensure that all plaque and tartar is removed. Cleaning your teeth will help ensure that the gel works to its best potential. In addition, if you suffer from any dental complications such as gum disease or tooth decay, we will need to address these issues first, before whitening treatment can begin.

In fact, if you do have any dental problems, Dr. Steve Kim will work with you to create a treatment plan that includes correcting the issues and then improving your smile.

After you have your in-office treatment, we will provide you with aftercare instructions and also an at-home treatment kit, which allows you to maintain and upkeep your teeth while you are not receiving treatment.
