Tooth pain is one of the most common reasons why patients visit the dentist. Sometimes, depending on the amount of pain you are in, you may seek out an emergency dentist to provide you with the relief you need right away.

Unfortunately, if the cause of your pain is related to a tooth problem or a problem with your gums, the pain is unlikely to subside until you have had the problem corrected, i.e. gum disease, an abscess, or tooth decay.

If you are experiencing a dental emergency or if you are in pain, call Dr. Steve Kim DDS today! We offer same day emergency dental appointments to help relieve your pain and fix the problem before it turns into something worse.

What to Do in an Emergency Situation

One of the scariest things that can happen to you is to experience a dental emergency and not know what to do about it. Below, we will go over some of the steps you should take if you do experience any of the common dental emergencies.

Tooth Decay

One of the scariest things that can happen to you is to experience a dental emergency and not know what to do about it. Below, we will go over some of the steps you should take if you do experience any of the common dental emergencies.

If you have an abscess on your tooth or gums, it is important that you do not touch it or try to pop it. If you do, you may experience more pain or you may injure yourself. You should call our office to schedule your emergency appointment.

When you come in, Dr. Kim will handle the abscess for you including draining it, cleaning it, and providing the care needed to alleviate your pain.

Broken and Fractured Teeth

Fractures, chips, and breaks happen to teeth and sometimes there is no way to prevent it from happening. If you are experiencing this type of emergency, you should not touch the tooth, as you may damage it more.

You should call our office immediately to schedule an appointment. Dr. Kim will do everything possible to save your tooth and we may need to place a crown over top of the tooth to protect it.

Loose Teeth

If your tooth is loose or becomes loose, you should seek emergency care for it. One of the best things you can do is avoid wiggling the tooth. Even though you may want to, you may injure the area or cause the tooth to fall out.

You will need to come into our office and see Dr. Kim to discuss your dental options in this situation.

Knocked Out Tooth

If your tooth has been knocked out, try to recover it as quickly as possible. When you do recover the tooth, you can either place it into a cup of milk to salvage it or you can place the tooth back into the socket it came out of.

When picking up your tooth, avoid touching the root, as this may damage or kill it. You should call our office immediately and come in to see Dr. Kim to discuss your options.

If you have a cut, scrape, or laceration in your mouth, you should clean the area thoroughly and then assess the damage. If you have excessive bleeding or the wound appears to be deep, you need to call our office right away. Sometimes, cuts and lacerations require stitches to close the wound.

Broken Jaw

If you have a broken jaw, you may be in immense pain. A broken jaw is a serious emergency and should not be taken lightly. First and foremost, do NOT try to touch your jaw and avoid trying to move your mouth as you may inflict more pain to your body.

You should grab a cold pack of ice and place it on your face, near the jaw joints. You should head right to the emergency room in the even that we are closed or you should have someone call our office immediately when we are open, so we can schedule you an appointment.

Loose Braces

If your braces come loose, it is important that you do not mess with them or try to completely disconnect them from the teeth. You should try to keep your mouth closed when traveling to our office. Once here, Dr. Kim will take a look at your braces and reattach them or replace them for you.
